Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia Review & Rating
- Dry and wet traction
- Smooth, comfortable and quiet ride
- Tread life
- High speed cornering
Low rolling resistance tires have quickly become popular among both tire makers and tire buyers. With their increased fuel efficiency the savings can really add up. That’s one of the big factors behind the Bridgestone Dueler H/L 422 Ecopia tire.
This model is designed from the ground up to provide a boost in fuel economy without actually taking anything away from high levels of all-season performance for drivers of trucks, SUV’s and crossovers. So, how well does this tire actually perform, and can you reasonably expect to see any savings on fuel over the course of time?
The 422 Ecopia is very good at reducing resistance, but they also provide extremely good traction in dry and wet road conditions alike. While most all-season tires are good in dry conditions, very few are able to maintain the same standards when the pavement gets wet.
Taking the industry average as a benchmark, the H/L 422 Ecopia manages to excel in wet conditions and can actually be said to provide above average wet weather traction. This is a result of its silica tread compound, Bridgestone’s unique NanoPro Tech technology, and the tire’s four wide circumferential groove around the tread.
Cornering – Steering
Cornering capability on these tires is more than adequate for most any driver, although aggressive cornering is not what this tire was designed for. Steering response and overall tire stability is another high point for this model. You get a very confident feeling driving on this tire regardless of road conditions.
Winter handling is much better than you might expect. These tires are very good at handling around six inches of snow as we found in our tests. Slippage only occurred when we tried quick movements with our SUV. In fact, it is even possible to stop and start on a hill in snow with these tires. Where they have some difficulty is in handling deep amounts of snow. But if you live in an area that sees heavy snowfall then you know a set of dedicated winter tires is what you really need anyway.
Ride Comfort – Road Noise
Ride quality is nothing short of amazing on this tire. We say that with no hype intended. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and road noise is basically non-existent on everything but the worst of roads. You can see by the many reviews from other drivers that they agree as well. Bridgestone has done an excellent job in this area.
The 422 Ecopia has a UTQG rating of 640 which means that they should remain operational for approximately 60,000 miles or more depending on driving habits and maintenance. The key point here is whether their tread life is enough for them to give a substantial return in terms of fuel economy to their owners. The resounding answer to this is yes, as per our calculations.
Bridgestone says that an SUV getting 20 mpg should be able to save a whopping $735 over the life of these tires if the per gallon rate is around $4. Even if the claims are too high and we only assume a fuel efficiency increase of half that then these tires can still end up saving around $365.
The 422 Ecopia comes with a five-year or 65,000 mile tread warranty. Combine this with the kind of savings they can create and the dependable performance they deliver, and you have an exceptional tire which is well worth buying.
