Falken Ziex S/TZ-04 Review & Rating
- Traction on dry and wet roads
- Quick steering response
- Very quiet tires
- Winter handling
The Falken Ziex S/TZ-04 is a high performance tire that comes with an affordable price. More often than not these two things do not go hand in hand, however Falken believes they have cracked the market with this set.
They are meant for light trucks, SUV’s and crossovers and should provide a quiet, comfortable ride with superior traction. We decided to test these credentials using our standard set of criteria in traction, handling, noise and tread life.
So, how did the Falken Ziex S/TZ-04’s shape up? Here’s a look.
Coming with the Falken Ziex S/TZ-04’s is an all-season tread compound coupled with an asymmetrical tread design which improves traction and grip in both wet and dry conditions. We found that they have a great tread depth – better than most others in their category – and they performed well on most road surfaces.
The high angle lateral grooves and the four wider circumferential grooves certainly help in wet conditions and they do offer excellent performance in regards to traction in both dry and wet driving.
Cornering – Steering
The steering response on the Falken Ziex S/TZ-04’s is actually very good. The tires offer good balance and stability at both low and higher speeds. They are very easy to drive on.
There have been some reports of vibrating and ‘bouncy’ steering, however we couldn’t find any evidence of this when we took the tires on the road and actually, they have been among the most responsive tires we have used recently.
The tires are M+S rated so they are supposed to perform equally well in bad conditions as they are in good and this includes snow and less than suitable winter roads.
We get that tire companies want to market their products as all year round solutions but the Falken Ziex S/TZ-04’s fell down a bit when driving on snow. They are certainly not the worst tires we have ever driven on in a few inches of the white stuff, however they could be a bit better. We justify this conclusion by the fact that they perform so well in dry and wet road surfaces, but they fall a little short in snow and ice.
Ride Comfort – Road Noise
A lot tire manufacturers are now placing a great deal of emphasis on reducing road noise. Most have traction and handling locked down so importance is switched to reducing the decibel level when driving with the tires on.
Many people have commented that these tires are among the quietest that you can buy and this is partly down to the tread pattern optimization that Falken has incorporated into the Ziex S/TZ-04’s. We found them extremely quiet on the road and they are also comfortable and seem to absorb shocks and vibrations well.
Tread life and high performance tires can be a tricky combination. Unless you are going right to the top of the spectrum you can usually guarantee less than adequate tread life, however the Falken Ziex S/TZ-04’s actually have decent wear and tear.
Expect to get around 40-50k out of the tires before encountering any problems. As always this is subjective and some will experience issues way before this mark, however as an average barometer of what you should expect to get out of the tires, this is about right.
Falken Ziex S/TZ-04 tires come with a warranty of 50 000 miles which is very good for their high performance and durability. As we mentioned above you should expect to get around this figure out of them before they need replacing and this is certainly a big plus point considering their high performance.
