Product Overview

Pros:
  • All season traction
  • Cornering grip
  • Low cost
Cons:
  • Winter handling
Bottom Line: 3 / 5

First arriving in 2012, the Ohtsu FP7000 is Falken Tire Corporation’s first all-season passenger radial offered to North American markets under the Ohtsu brand. Available in over 45 sizes for 14-inch through 18-inch wheel diameters and in 40 to 65 series aspect ratios, the tire is said to offer exceptional value and year-round performance for a surprisingly low cost.

Traction

A symmetric and non-directional tread design helps the FP7000 deliver very good all-season traction on a variety of road surfaces. Braking and steering response are both quick and provide good feedback.

Four circumferential grooves and numerous lateral grooves increase grip on wet pavement and work to reduce any hydroplaning. The tire’s dual steel belts also improve structural strength, which translates to enhanced traction in both wet and dry conditions.

Cornering – Steering

A non-directional symmetric tread pattern allows for greater responsiveness. Combined with the tire’s high-tension carcass, dual steel belts and belt cap design, this model allows for sharp cornering with little to no understeer. The tire comes in sizes that carry speed ratings of H, V, and W.

Winter Handling

Built for all-season use, the FP7000 does provide decent traction and handling in light winter conditions. Specifically, the tread design incorporates a high-volume center groove, lateral grooves, and 4 circumferential grooves to help navigate slush and snow covered surfaces. Ice an heavy snow is an area where this tire falters as you might expect.

Ride Comfort – Road Noise

Its variable shoulder tread block is designed to minimize road noise and allow for a smoother ride. This tire does a pretty good overall job of doing that. It’s reasonably quiet and the ride provides good comfort unless you’re hitting potholes or uneven surfaces.

Tread Life

Ohtsu FP7000One advantage to the non-directional tread pattern is that it allows for easy and quick tire rotations to increase the longevity of the tires. Additionally, tread wear indicators easily enable the driver to see when it’s time for a rotation. With a Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) rating of 440 or 480 (depending on size), the Ohtsu FP7000 is designed for a longer lasting tread life.

Warranty

Falken covers the vast majority of Ohtsu FP7000 sizes with a 40,000 mile tread warranty. All in all this Ohtsu model delivers good performance at a budget-friendly price.
